Add a Note or Suggested edit
Select the words you want to comment on and choose Review. Use a Note for a question or comment. Use Suggested edit when you want to propose replacement wording or remove the selected text.
The item appears under Writing Tools › Review and stays connected to the selected passage.
- Select the text the feedback refers to.
- Choose Review.
- Choose Note or Suggested edit.
- Write the comment or replacement text and save it.
Work through open feedback
Selecting a Review item takes you back to its text. Accept a Suggested edit to apply it, or reject it to keep the current wording. Resolve a Note when the question or task is finished.
Finished items remain available in Review history, so a decision does not have to erase the record.
Work through Review in any order. Opening an item never accepts it or changes the draft.
Suggested edits are written by people
Compose does not generate the replacement text in a Suggested edit. The person creating the item writes the proposed wording, and the writer decides whether to use it.
A deletion is also an explicit suggestion. It is not a separate automated editing mode.
When the draft has changed underneath a suggestion
Compose will not silently replace newer writing with an older suggestion. If the original selected text no longer matches, Review shows a conflict and asks you what to do.
If the selected passage is gone, Compose keeps the Review item. You can still read the feedback even though its original anchor is missing.
Free-plan limit
Free documents can have up to five unresolved Notes or Suggested edits at one time. Resolving or deleting an item frees a slot for another.
Pro and Teams remove the open-Review creation limit. Existing Review history remains part of the document.
What happens when you export
Clean exports leave Review out. Word is the exception: Documents › Export › Word lets you keep the default Clean document or choose Include comments and suggested edits.
When Review is included, open comments become native Word comments and open Suggested edits become Track Changes that Word can accept or reject. Resolved items stay out of the DOCX, and Compose warns if an orphaned item cannot be attached safely.
Import works the other way for supported Word body comments and text insertions or deletions under Track Changes. Keep the .compose file for the full Review record, including resolved history and Compose-only repair information.
